Nation First: Building an Indian Popcorn System

2 June 2026/5 min read

In the early 2000s, much of the popping corn served in Indian cinemas had travelled across an ocean. The crop was widely treated as a speciality that only a small number of producing countries could supply consistently.

Venagro Popcorn Pvt. Ltd. was incorporated in 2021 to help organise a different system: popcorn maize grown in India, processed for popcorn-specific applications and connected to commercial buyers through one operating company.

The sourcing model combines own and leased farms, contract farming and open-market procurement. Each route has a different role, but together they make the system more resilient than relying on one crop or one source.

Today the cultivation network covers 7,000 acres across Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Processing capacity stands at 25,000 MT annually, with a supply network spanning 14 Indian states.

Nation First is not a claim that the work is finished. It is a direction for the work: develop crop knowledge, processing capability and commercial value within India, while giving growers and buyers a clearer system to participate in.
